Content Migration to XML

Kohler

Challenge

Kohler was implementing a content management (CMS) system which required thousands of documents to be converted to XML for use online, in PDF format, and in multiple languages.

Kohler required a partner to assist in implementing this system, migrating the content, and maintaining the documents.

Solution

Contiem consulted with Kohler in the early development stages to assist in the decisions relating to system architecture and the establishment of XML topics. Led by a Contiem project manager, Contiem writers, and illustrators created master documents, analyzed and updated the Kohler style guides, and refined the multi-language publishing process.

Contiem achieved continuity and consistency during the migration process by implementing a clearly defined, standard process for both the Contiem and Kohler teams to follow. The process also decreased the learning curve for new members joining the migration team.

Throughout the project life cycle, Contiem led the effort by streamlining the processes of publishing content from the CMS to the web, training new members on the processes and standards, and ensuring that each document was produced using the new Kohler standards.

Result

The XML migration met the business objectives of converting thousands of documents to XML for use within Kohler’s new CMS. From planning to implementation, Contiem worked directly with Kohler on each step of the process. After the migration, Contiem maintained and updated Kohler’s documentation.

The Contiem team worked with Kohler for several years on a variety of projects, meeting the fluctuating demands of Kohler’s documentation. The Contiem project manager, technical writers, and illustrators were available to Kohler as needed to update existing literature or illustrations or to fully manage the new product documentation lifecycle.

When properly implemented, XML provides an excellent path to automating the publishing process, producing and maintaining expansive volumes of high-quality content at a fraction of the typical costs. Contiem can work with you to create the content solution that best meets your goals and objectives.
