Content Respository & Automated Delivery Platform

SAGE Publishing

Background

SAGE Publishing is a leading international publisher of journals, books, and electronic media for academic, educational, and professional markets. Since 1965, SAGE has helped inform and educate a global community of scholars, practitioners, researchers, and students spanning a wide range of subject areas including business, humanities, social sciences, and science, technology and medicine. SAGE Publishing selected Contiem’s RSuite Enterprise for reliable content storage, delivery of content to customers and partners, and content analytics. SAGE currently publishes more than 460 journals electronically on SAGE Journals Online and recently launched the SAGE eReference online platform, which hosts more than 40 of the company’s encyclopedias.

Solution

RSuite Enterprise ingests SAGE’s XML and binary journal content. Based on a series of business rules, RSuite Enterprise pushes SAGE’s journal content through multiple automated workflow routines and delivery processes, including delivery to HighWire Press.

RSuite Enterprise stores SAGE’s XML journal content, related DTDs, and non-XML files, such as PDFs for each journal article. SAGE configured RSuite Enterprise’s workflow features to leverage RSuite’s action handlers that automate processes for multiple content types. These action handlers automate quality assurance functions, such as file validation, DOI confirmation, and element value verification.

Results

RSuite Enterprise’s workflow functionality minimizes human interaction. XML-based configuration files manage all content delivery functions including content selection, packaging, and distribution. System administrators can easily extend and modify these configuration files as needed, such as specifying a new delivery location parameter. Editorial direction is required only when an exception condition, defined by the business logic, is detected. When exceptions are found, task notifications are routed to the appropriate production group. Automated business rule checks include:

The system also serves as the repository of record for all journal content.

“RSuite Enterprise’s workflow features enable our staff to focus on increasing the quality of our content while RSuite Enterprise handles the XML-related actions. Additionally, the power of RSuite Enterprise will complement our staff by enforcing adherence to editorial standards in an automated manner.”
— John Shaw, Director of Publishing Technologies, SAGE Publishing
